nespresso… what else?

August 20, 2010

Visiting friends in New York City occasionally nets me a beautiful cup of Nespresso. I’ll admit, I am taken by the rainbow of colorful pods and have been wanting  one of my own. We have a coffee maker and really don’t need another machine on the counter, so I’ve managed to avoid a purchase so far…

dear friends,

July 30, 2010

When is the last time you picked up a pen and wrote a letter? I hardly ever send anything but thank you notes, but I do adore getting mail! The old-fashioned kind that comes via the post office from parts unknown and is deposited outside our front door by the mailman, Tom. There are shoeboxes in my office filled with old letters, some have been with me for over 25 years.  Emails may make life easier and certainly arrive a whole lot faster, but sadly something special has been lost in the art of personal communication.

Pilot has tapped right into that sentiment with its new handwritting app. In a world of obsessed with readability, it allows a bit of personalization back into your communications. This program cleverly translates your very own unique handwriting into a font. Presto, you can now send ‘handwritten’ emails. I posted a link to Pilot Handwriting app and the very next day I got an email back from a dear friend living in Madison Wisconsin. I haven’t seen CJ in 7 months. She was a natural candidate with very lovely penmanship, but I was most touched that she took the time get her handwriting digitized before she wrote back to me. It was that same special feeling you get when a personal letter arrives in the mail.

Wondering how it works? All is revealed in the video below.

I love listening to the jaunty Mozart piano rondo and watching the laptop keys click away! This web app was commissioned by Comercial Arge, the exclusive distributor of Pilot products in Spain, and I can hardly imagine many US apps being promoted with classical music, but it all feels so graceful. I was propelled through a world of nostalgia and charm into believing I really need my handwriting turned into a font… and to get started, I’ll have to find a pen.

how you like me now?

February 12, 2010

As I mentioned in a previous post,  I didn’t see a SINGLE commercial during the Super Bowl this year!  The next day, most of the blogs I follow were buzzing about Google’s ad, with its charming Parisian love story. Like any American who thinks of the City of Lights as a hopelessly romantic place, I was enveloped in a warm and fuzzy feeling after seeing it online.  BUT…when I read that Google edited out some of their search results  -et voilà- the magic was gone.

I glimpsed a truncated version of the KIA Sorrento ad on TV last night and though I can’t declare it the best (not that anyone cares what I think was the best Super Bowl ad), I will say it’s a favorite of mine! With its killer soundtrack, this ad is certainly a timely homage to last year’s every-man movie, The Hangover!  What a fresh sight to see these edgy shenanigans juxtaposed with the innocence of a child’s stuffed animals and toys.  I love how KIA ties their SUV with a state of mind… and a fun-loving one at that.

A departure from the expected… indeed.

EastRock wealth management

December 17, 2009

In our household, I am the right brain and my husband is the left.  I am Adobe Photoshop, he is Microsoft Excel.  I never thought I’d marry a financial advisor, but we’re like yin and yang. We have our strengths and we balance each other out.

After switching firms earlier this year (yeah- it was kind of like Jerry Maguire), his team brainstormed a new name for their partnership and settled on EastRock Wealth Management. Why East Rock?  First of all, it’s a landmark ridge and popular outdoor recreation spot in New Haven, CT.  But if you visit his 6th floor office at UBS, you’ll quickly see the real reason. Look past Anna Liffey’s, down Whitney Avenue and you’ll find East Rock looms large on the horizon:EastRock Wealth ManagementThese photos taken by the super awesome Jerome Braga of Studio1923.com

PS: You can easily drive up to the top of East Rock Park.  Here are some late afternoon shots from last month.

If you’re just tuning in… Quad Cities week continues!

For those of you wondering, what’s in Moline, Illinois?  THE answer is: it’s the home of John Deere. You know, tractors… lawn mowers?  There’s something so appealing about climbing around on a tractor (even as an adult), so I’d say the John Deere Pavillion is a must for anyone visiting the Quad Cities.John Deere PavillionI haven’t met a male homeowner who doesn’t love the idea of a sit-on lawn mower (yard zamboni as my husband calls it), even if his yard is the size of a postage stamp! Above, you can see D and Ryan in their element.John Deere PavillionFounded in 1837, Deere & Company has a long history as the one of the world’s leading farm and construction manufacturers. When you’re done climbing around on exhibits, you can also check out vintage models, read about the company history and get a glimpse into the technology & machinery powering the industrial food chain that feeds us all.  John Deere PavillionsIt’s amazing how recognizable their green & yellow branding is, even for those us not in the market for such equipment!   I favor the older John Deere logo, but also have to say, I like the more modern one as well!john-deere-pavillion04

the fun theory

A lovely video from Volkwagen promoting leaner and greener lives.
The car maker (and their agency) probably recognize mastering the piano and the art of viral marketing are equally elusive undertakings, but this campaign seems to be finding it’s way around the Internet.

I LOVE: keeping it local

October 5, 2009

This fall, Connecticut retailer Mitchells | Richards stays true to their roots and mailed Keeping It Local, ”a tribute to nature, history & arts of our home towns.”  The  publication features local heroes and photo shoots from nearby landmarks such as: The Super Duper Weenie, The Westport Country Playhouse and The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum.

I have one other bit of great “local” news.  Bill Taibe (did you adore Relish of SoNo?) has left Stamford’s Napa & Co and opened a new farm-to-table restaurant called Le Farm in Westport.

Going out on tour is a great way to drum up some serious buzz and listen up kids, it’s not just for rock stars!  The Danbury, CT agency Plaid has been driving its way through three tours of the U.S. in Plaid Nation. In their most recent trip, they wrapped a Ford Flex (check this flickr set for full tranformation) and set out for awesome inspiration spots like Threadless, Fedex and The Boring Store as they cruised the Midwest.

So who’s going out on tour next?  Justin & Mary Marantz, a killer photography studio based in New Haven, CT.  They’re bringing the Spread the Love tour to 20 U.S. cities and this is workshop is ALL about running a creative business that your customers will love to support. It’s not just a photography workshop, it’s LIFE workshop, so *any* business owner can benefit. Past events have covered: marketing, branding, building relationships, business 101, financial health, balancing life & business, & creating systems that stick. Heck – they’ve even brought this show on the road to the Hallmark Institute of Photography!

Head on over to http://www.justinmarantz.com  and vote for your nearest city by 12pm EST on Sept 18, 2009 and hopefully their Road-Rules inspired Winnebago will be pulling up in your neck of the woods in 2010.

Just so you know, if I ever went out on tour… I’d be sure it was in a seriously retro Airstream.

How much do I love J&M?  We scheduled an anniversary shoot with this dynamic duo back in June! All the photos below are from the subterranean, New York City institution in Grand Central Terminal, the Oyster Bar Restsaurant.
