sofra bakery, again

Yes, more from Sofra Bakery in Cambridge, MA. In case you haven’t been following along with my obsession, this is the casual cafe/bakery of Ana Sortun, chef of Oleana also in Cambridge. These beauties were driven down by our weekend guest Miranda. I had to shoot quickly, before they all disappeared. Miranda also matter-of-factly told [...]

In case you haven’t been following along with my obsession, this is the casual cafe/bakery of Ana Sortun, chef of Oleana also in Cambridge. These beauties were driven down by our weekend guest Miranda. I had to shoot quickly, before they all disappeared.

Miranda also matter-of-factly told me I should post more often. I love to hear this because it means someone actually misses this blog when it’s silenced by the other demands on my free time. Here’s to hoping I can post more regularly now that our summer travel is behind us.

Time to wrap-up my Sofra obsession with some photos of this surprise treat that came all the way to Connecticut, from Massachusetts via Maine.  When Miranda handed over the Sofra Bakery bag, I practically squeaked with delight right in the lobby of the Portland Harbor Hotel!  Miranda’s already a fan of Oleana and explained that Sofra’s not far from her [...]

Miranda’s already a fan of Oleana and explained that Sofra’s not far from her dry cleaner. She dropped in on Saturday morning to finally check it out.  How lucky am I to have this deliciousness hand-delivered!?  We painstakingly kept both of these mezzes on ice until we could get home and enjoy on Sunday night. Upon tasting, we were split down the middle. My favorite is the beet tzatziki on the left and D adores the whipped feta on the right. Honestly, they are both amazing! It’s not often that we have truly good quality bread in the house, but on Sunday morning we had already selected the perfect rustic baguette at Standard Baking Company in Portland.Thoughtfully, Miranda provided some sweet to balance the savory. There were originally more baked goods inside the box, but a few were devoured before the camera came out.  I have no idea what either of these sweets are called, but they were certainly worth the calories! Thanks Miranda!  The food was delicious, but the best gift was having you join us on our quick trip to Portland.

It’s no secret I’m in love with Sofra and Saturday I was the *amazingly* lucky recipient of a “special delivery” from this bakery. More about that later this week because this stroke of good fortune deserves its own post. It’s a shame that even with the photos, you won’t get a true sense of amazing flavors [...]

It’s a shame that even with the photos, you won’t get a true sense of amazing flavors in Ana Sortun’s food… The taste is always beyond all my expectations. Sunday night we decided to throw some of the dukkah spice mix on the zucchini. That’s probably NOT the best use for it, but it sure made summer squash a lot more exciting!

craigie on main in cambridge

If you want to dine at a fine restaurant the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, you’d better line up your reservation well in advance!  We didn’t jump into action early enough… so when I tried to get a table at Oleana, there was nothing available at a reasonable hour. If you want to dine at a fine restaurant the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, you’d better line up your reservation well in advance!  We didn’t jump into action early enough… so when I tried to get a table at Oleana, there was nothing available at a reasonable hour. I did ask some locals for their recommendations, not that any were an easy reservation. We settled on tasty dinner at french/cambodian Elephant Walk on Beacon Street, just walking distance from Hotel Commonwealth where we were staying. The restaurant was completely filled, but the kitchen and staff didn’t have any problem keeping up with V day demand.  It was impressive to see the whole place run so smoothly on a busy night.
With our revised game plan, we zeroed in on Sunday brunch at Craigie on MainCambridge.  It was a delicious meal (and I generally don’t like brunch), with great service.  They even take their cocktails quite seriously!  If you happen to see a sugar-coated donut on the menu,  I would order it. It was right up there with a malasada from Leonard’s (Honolulu) or a Downyflake donut (Nantucket). Below is Brent’s burger with crispy shoestring potatoes!Craigie's on Main in CambridgeHere are Boston/Cambridge recommendations we received:
Oleana, Craigie on Main, Blue Room, Ten Tables, Myer + Chang, Upstairs on the Square, Tangerino (ask for the tent), L’Espalier, Aquitaine, Mistral, Rialto, & Eastern Standard. Clearly we need to get back to Boston!

If you’re in Boston, make your way to Sofra for some amazing baked goods and prepared foods. Everything we ate was delicious. And if you’re in the mood for something more formal, chef Ana Sortun has another lovely spot called Oleana. I dream about going back and dining in the  beautiful outdoor courtyard.
