so long 2011

This year there was a lot of procrastinating on plans for New Year’s Eve. After our trip to NYC,  I was unsure what we could handle after the holidays.  On Thursday, we finally looked into Union League, but with a 1920s dress optional, it sounded a bit too fancy. We considered Oaxaca Kitchen and mention of dj /”dance on all-time hitz” made us nervous. In the end, we squeaked in an early reservation at Caseus and followed dinner with a cocktail at 116 Crown. In the words of Goldilocks, that NYE plan ended up being “just right” for us.

Langres Cheese of Champagne with Berry Compote & Fresh Berries

House Made Egg Parpadella, Black Truffles & Wild Mushrooms
with roasted Hedgehog, Nebrodini and Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, freshly grated black truffle & Sottocenere al Tartuffo grilled cheese crouton crumbs

That’s right, a dinner interlude with mad libs. I’ll spare you the completed version.

Taleggio Crème Caramel
Dark Chocolate Salted Caramel Popcorn
St. Germain Lemon Dream Bar

On to 116 Crown

Bubbly is flowing, but it’s not ours.

A new favorite: Forth & Clyde

I was fascinated by the attire at this table. If you look closely you’ll see a few of the details, the bowtie, the pleats, the kilt pin, the buttons…

D was driving and he often refers to NYE as amateur night, so we were safely back in Milford in time for the downtown fireworks.

Wishing you a 2012 filled with wonderful adventures and delicious meals! Thanks for visiting, for enduring errors, typos and long stretches with no posts. I’m not much good with resolutions… but I’m working on it. As always, I love hearing from you guys, so (please) say hello in the comments section.

You might remember A + J from their Quad Cities wedding a few years ago. Last week they drove into town for a wedding and also managed one heck of a whirlwind tour of the Northeast.

In between 1 day stops in Boston and NYC, they toured Yale’s campus while waiting for us to reach New Haven. I made sure to ask them to avoid the jeans and sneakers so we could step inside Mory’s for a drink.  These days dress codes are kind of old school.  But in my book, you really don’t get more old school than Mory’s at Yale! This venerable campus institution has recently allowed non-Yalies to join. D works in New Haven and became a member when the club re-opened.

It was a Wednesday night and the womens’ group Whim N Rhythm was performing. I believe this is a seniors-only group?  Regardless, I still feel old when I’m on campus.

It was J’s first time in Connecticut. Obviously we had to take him to Wooster Street. He had already seen New Haven pizzerias featured on a tv show and he was ready to taste for himself!

That night Sally’s wasn’t open and Pepe’s was out of clams. Even with a 45 minute wait, we were still happy campers once our table at Pepe’s was stacked with pizza  (red: bacon& onion, red:pepperoni, white: sausage and mushroom). Leeanne commented on the school of thought that the authentic Pepe’s Wooster Street experience is often dished up with a side of surly service. This time our server was quite friendly and attentive.  It was certainly a surprise and a nice touch for our guests who originally hail from the Midwest.

sally’s apizza in new haven

May 15th, 2011

When first-time visitors come calling in Connecticut, we often suggest going out for pizza. Specifically, New Haven pizza. When first-time visitors come calling in Connecticut, we often suggest going out for pizza. Specifically, New Haven pizza. There’s much local debate regarding the best place for a pie (and you can feel free to share your favorite in the comments), but today we’re digging in at Sally’s Apizza.

D’s friend David is a frequent presence at Sally’s. Dining with a regular brought our Wooster Street experience to a whole new level. We ordered completely different pizzas from our normal routine and Rick Consiglio (below) graciously allowed us behind the counter for an up-close blast of hot air from the coal-fired oven.

David, our guide for the evening, told us he eats at Sally’s about 2 times a week. Obviously he is no a stranger to the gym, but he has another trick up his sleeve. White pies, light on the mozz. Easing up on the cheese allows other ingredients to take center stage and makes things a little easier on your waistline! Here’s my favorite of the night. It’s a white pie with zucchini, onions, tomato and basil. Look for it in specials on the back of the menu.

Unique to Sally’s is its incredibly homey feel. There is a warmth to the wood paneling, the happy customers and the family that keeps things humming along in the back.

Somehow we ending up with 1 medium and 5 small pizzas for 3 people! I was embarrassed when the trays stacked up, but the truth is, you can never have too much leftover pizza.

If you’re a regular reader, you know I love to go behind the scenes.

Red pie, with pepperoni.

Take a closer look and everywhere you will see decades worth of fascinating details from this family-run business.

Another red pie. Half eggplant and half meatball.

White clam pie.

700 degrees!!! That’s how you get that beautiful crust.

I hope this isn’t some kind of state secret, but we asked David for his favorite combos. This white pie has mushrooms and a mix of sweet and hot peppers. I’d never dream this up, but trust me – you want to try it. Usually I shy away from hot peppers, but the sweet ones balance things out.

I work in a cube all week long, so I’m fascinated by other workspaces.
How much room do you really need to handle your paperwork? Any why not have a Tootsie Pop tree on your desk!?

Thank you to the Consiglios for the kind welcome and delicious pizza. And one huge shout out to David, our Sally’s ambassador and to the whole Friday night crew cranking out those amazing pies.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since our trip to Moline, IL for Ann and Jason’s wedding!  This was our first Saturday/Sunday at home in about a month and we had leaf peeping on the agenda. Unfortunately, my cousin Brent couldn’t join us, he was too busy hitting the books before midterms. I took lots of photos for him (and for all my other readers who don’t live in New England)! We’ll save the raking for when Brent is able to break away from campus! This was our annual hike up to the top of West Rock, over near Southern Connecticut State University. If you’re feeling a little lazy, you can even drive to the top! Today was the first time I took out the Sigma 18-50mm lens to do landscape shots.

You can see the full set of photos from our hike on Flickr.

best laid plans

Today I had hopes to wait patiently for a table at Seattle’s How to Cook a Wolf.  But sadly we are missing Em & Pete’s wedding this weekend. With heavy hearts and indecision on where to eat, we decided to drop in at Miso last night. Only New Zealand King Salmon and 2 seats at the sushi [...]

Today I had hopes to wait patiently for a table at Seattle’s How to Cook a Wolf.  But sadly we are missing Em & Pete’s wedding this weekend. With heavy hearts and indecision on where to eat, we decided to drop in at Miso last night. Only New Zealand King Salmon and 2 seats at the sushi bar, hanging with Chef Jason Tay could save the day. He gently chided us for not visiting in ages, but all kidding aside, we settled into our old routine and simply let him pick out the best sashimi for us. You may remember Jason from East Restaurant in Milford… but the best sushi around has moved with him to New Haven.

Once we’re in 9th square area, it’s hard to resist a cocktail at 116 Crown. Below: The Marquess of Queensbury and the Four Theives. Amazingly, these photos were taken with my Droid Incredible phone.

A few weeks ago we scooped Brent up at the New Haven train station and drove on over to Caseus where we had lunch on a lovely, but noisy outdoor patio.  After lunch, we stopped in at the lower level fromagerie and bought some truffle goat cheese, Grafton cheddar and a Camembert. They always have the skinny onion ficelle that I can’t seem to find anywhere else. And for a last minute impulse item, I went for the Snark Handbook. I’m not sure why a cheese shop was selling this guide to verbal sparring, but I did note the author lives in Hamden, CT. While this is all fine and dandy, the real thing I’ve been waiting to try is the Caseus Cheese Truck. It parks in different downtown New Haven locations and sells grilled cheese!  D tells me it’s amazing, but I’ve yet to track it down.  You can follow The Cheese Truck on Twitter for daily information.Left: ORGANIC PORK TENDERLOIN SALAD. EastRock wealth management

December 17th, 2009

In our household, I am the right brain and my husband is the left.  I am Adobe Photoshop, he is Microsoft Excel.  I never thought I’d marry a financial advisor, but we’re like yin and yang. After switching firms earlier this year (yeah- it was kind of like Jerry Maguire), his team brainstormed a new name for their partnership and settled on EastRock Wealth Management. Why East Rock?  First of all, it’s a landmark ridge and popular outdoor recreation spot in New Haven, CT.  But if you visit his 6th floor office at UBS, you’ll quickly see the real reason. Look past Anna Liffey’s, down Whitney Avenue and you’ll find East Rock looms large on the horizon:EastRock Wealth ManagementThese photos taken by the super awesome Jerome Braga of Studio1923.com

PS: You can easily drive up to the top of East Rock Park.  Here are some late afternoon shots from last month.

We had a rare treat this past weekend. My aunt and uncle flew in from California and visited us during their fall foliage trip. Lucky for us, they wanted to try a slice of the famous New Haven-style pizza. I brought my camera along especially to take a few photos for the groom of today’s wedding we are attending in the Midwest.  Jason now lives in Phoenix, but has seen Pepe’s on tv and wanted to know if it lives up to all the hype. If you like thin crust pizza… it sure does!  To prove it, we waited in line for 45 minutes just to get in the door. I’m sorry I didn’t get good photo of the white clam pizza with bacon, but I was trapped in my corner of booth 23.  Every time I take that first bite, I remember why I’m willing to wait for these amazing, crispy pies.Pepe's PizzaPepe's Pizza
