double the cake, double the fun

I can’t believe it’s been a year since Emily and Michael were born. Having no kids of my own, I worried their first birthday party might be a dangerous experiment in controlled chaos, but the afternoon went off without a hitch. I can’t believe it’s been a year since Emily and Michael were born. Having no kids of my own, I worried their first birthday party might be a dangerous experiment in controlled chaos, but the afternoon went off without a hitch. Of course their mom was an event planner in her previous life and I should know better than to underestimate her party planning skills. We caught up with Jo and Pete’s family and the afternoon’s musical entertainment proved that children’s songs have not changed much since I was a kid.!

a walk in the park

May 24th, 2010

We had a little time to kill in Manhattan and on a sunny (but blustery and pollen-filled) Saturday earlier this month, we stopped in at Bryant Park. I know they aren’t the same, but these green chairs remind me of the Tuileries in Paris. You can’t help but smile in this oasis of leafy tranquility right behind the NY Public Library. [...]

I know they aren’t the same, but these green chairs remind me of the Tuileries in Paris. You can’t help but smile in this oasis of leafy tranquility right behind the NY Public Library. Just looking back on these shots makes me relax a bit and that’s always welcome on a Monday morning. In other news from my weekend, our new neighbors moved in, Brent came to visit, we discovered the gardening wonders of Van Wilgen’s in Branford and last but not least, I broke the screen of my much-hated Blackberry Storm. I’m not sure if this week will bring a new cell phone purchase. I hope not. I’ll have to think back to these photos while I’m waiting at the Verizon Wireless store.

bemelmans bar in new york city

January 12th, 2010

I have this thing for old-world hotel bars.  The great thing is this obsession gives you a glimpse into some classic hotels, minus the expensive overnight stays. The Carlyle on Madison Ave in New York City is no exception.  I finally got around to Bemelman’s Bar last year and I was thrilled by how marvelously dark and cozy it was inside. [...]

When your eyes adjust to the dim lighting, the next surprise is the Ludwig Bemelman commissioned mural.  Look familiar?  Think the childrens’ book Madeline!!  These illustrations were made in exchange for an 18-month stay at the hotel. Bemelman's Bar in the Carlyle HotelYou’ll want to get here before 9:30 pm. There is a $25 cover charge for the music, but there’ s a easy work around. Slide into your banquette (with its silver-tiered tray of salty potato chips and cheese straws) before the first pianist starts playing jazz standards at 5:30 pm and you’ll only need to manage the tab for your NYC priced cocktails. If you plan on about $20 a drink, you’ll be properly prepared.

off to the market

January 8th, 2010

I went to to the City mid-week and since we were in the neighborhood, I wanted to finally check out Chelsea Market. I was a little overwhelmed by the selection, so I thought of this trip as a quick overview.   I’ll have to return when I have more time to poke around at length!  Next time… I promise to take more [...]

Here are a few from my (Canon G10) point & shoot.Chelsea Market in NYCThere is definitely some noticable heat coming off those millions of white lights on the right.  Such a thick curtain of Christmas lights seems like it must be a fire hazard, but it sure has a beautiful, dazzling effect!

nyc: sakagura

October 12th, 2009

We wanted to try one of the many izakaya spots in Vancouver, but ran out of meals.  I’ve had Sakagura on my mind since we returned.  Descend into this hidden midtown spot and you’ll feel like you’ve left Manhattan and been transported to Japan. Here are a few of the dishes we sampled:Left: EBI SHINJO [...]

Here are a few of the dishes we sampled:Sakagura NYCLeft: EBI SHINJO : Deep Fried Shrimp Balls Covered with Sliced Almonds
Right: FLUKE CARPACCIO : Thinly Fluke Sashimi Drizzled with Olive Oil Topped with Plum Paste, Salmon Roe and ShisoSakagura NYCThis is a world class sake bar and they have over 200 bottles. We had no idea where to start!  The server recommended 3 carafes and we worked our way through increasingly drier sakes.Sakagura NYC- Roasted Duck KAMO ROAST : Slices of Chilled Roasted Duck Wrapped Around Scallion Accented with Basil Sauce

Don’t skip dessert! We had shochu truffles and the BLACK SESAME CREAM BRULEE with Black Sesame Ice Cream, paired with a sparkling sake.
